New software/technology topics learned

HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language)was designed because no other markup or scripting language was available which met the needs of handheld devices with limited resources -- memory, processing speed, and bandwidth. HDML is currently in use by a number of service providers and device manufacturers. A user agent has been developed and ported to 10 different platforms, including Unix and Windows. Hundreds of applications are available today and thousands of developers have begun developing applications based on this initial user agent implementation.

Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) was initially a proprietary protocol developed by Macromedia for streaming audio, video and data over the Internet, between a Flash player and a server. Macromedia is now owned by Adobe, which has released the specification of the protocol for public use.

EPUB (short for electronic publication; alternatively capitalized as ePub, ePUB, EPub, or epub, with "EPUB" preferred by the vendor) is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Files have the extension .epub.

ZigBee
ZigBee is a low-cost, low-power, wireless mesh networking standard. The low cost allows the technology to be widely deployed in wireless control and monitoring applications, the low power-usage allows longer life with smaller batteries, and the mesh networking provides high reliability and larger range.

XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a language for electronic communication of business and financial data which is revolutionising business reporting around the world. It offers major benefits to all those who have to create, transmit, use or analyse such information. XBRL has been developed by XBRL International, a not-for-profit consortium of over 450 companies and organisations which is promoting its worldwide use.

PERT
The Program (or Project) Evaluation and Review Technique, commonly abbreviated PERT, is a model for project management designed to analyze and represent the tasks involved in completing a given project. It is commonly used in conjunction with the critical path method or CPM.
Complex projects require a series of activities, some of which must be performed sequentially and others that can be performed in parallel with other activities. This collection of series and parallel tasks can be modeled as a network.
In 1957 the Critical Path Method (CPM) was developed as a network model for project management. CPM is a deterministic method that uses a fixed time estimate for each activity. While CPM is easy to understand and use, it does not consider the time variations that can have a great impact on the completion time of a complex project.
The Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a network model that allows for randomness in activity completion times. PERT was developed in the late 1950's for the U.S. Navy's Polaris project having thousands of contractors. It has the potential to reduce both the time and cost required to complete a project.

RAD:
Rapid application development is a software development methodology that involves methods like iterative development and software prototyping. According to Whitten (2004), it is a merger of various structured techniques, especially data-driven Information Engineering, with prototyping techniques to accelerate software systems development

The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC), or Software Development Life Cycle in systems engineering, information systems and software engineering, is the process of creating or altering systems, and the models and methodologies that people use to develop these systems. The concept generally refers to computer or information systems. Emphasis on this article (SDLC) is on man-made technological life-cycle. But there are many other life-cycle models to choose from. This includes ecological life cycles, for every life cycle, whether biological or technological, has a beginning and an end.

In software engineering the SDLC concept underpins many kinds of software development methodologies. These methodologies form the framework for planning and controlling the creation of an information system[1]: the software development process.

PGP Virtual Disk is an on-the-fly encryption (OTFE) system that allows one to create a virtual encrypted disk within a file.

Older versions for Windows NT were freeware (for example, bundled with PGP v6.0.2i; and with some of the CKT builds of PGP). These are still available for download, but no longer maintained. Today, PGP Virtual Disk is available as part of the PGP Desktop product family, running on Windows 2000/XP/Vista, and Mac OS X.

IEEE 802.11 is a set of standards for implementing wireless local area network (WLAN) computer communication in the 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz frequency bands. They are created and maintained by the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802). The base current version of the standard is IEEE 802.11-2007. These standards provide the basis for Wi-Fi wireless networks.

Difference Between GPS and GIS
1. The GPS (Global Position System) is a network that locates certain places here on earth whereas the GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computer program that process data linked to certain places or locations.

2. The GIS is a more generic framework compared to the specific GPS network.

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is tool to display and analyze information geographically. GPS (Global Positioning Systems) is a technology that uses satellites to give one its position on the Earth with the aid of a GPS device or unit. GPS can be incorporated into GIS by using a GPS device to collect points, lines, or polygons, which can be imported into a GIS application for future analysis and interpretation.

Portlets are pluggable user interface software components that are managed and displayed in a web portal. Portlets produce fragments of markup code that are aggregated into a portal. Typically, following the desktop metaphor, a portal page is displayed as a collection of non-overlapping portlet windows, where each portlet window displays a portlet. Hence a portlet (or collection of portlets) resembles a web-based application that is hosted in a portal. Some examples of portlet applications are email, weather reports, discussion forums, and news.

Objective-C is a reflective, object-oriented programming language that adds Smalltalk-style messaging to the C programming language.
Today, it is used primarily on Apple's Mac OS X and iOS: two environments derived from the OpenStep standard, though not compliant with it.[1] Objective-C is the primary language used for Apple's Cocoa API, and it was originally the main language on NeXT's NeXTSTEP OS. Generic Objective-C programs that do not use these libraries can also be compiled for any system supported by gcc or Clang.

WebGL is a cross-platform, royalty-free web standard for a low-level 3D graphics API based on OpenGL ES 2.0, exposed through the HTML5 Canvas element as Document Object Model interfaces.
WebP (pronounced "weppy")[5][6] is an image format that employs lossy compression.[7] It is developed by Google, based on technology acquired with the purchase of On2 Technologies.[8] As a derivative of the video format VP8, it is a sister project to the multimedia container format WebM
WebM is an audio-video format designed to provide a royalty-free, open video compression format for use with HTML5 video. The project's development is sponsored by Google.
A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile of Matroska.[2][3][4] The project releases WebM related software under a BSD license and all users are granted a worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free patent license. Despite this, some in the industry have called upon Google to provide indemnification against patent suits
Telnet is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area networks to provide a bidirectional interactive text-oriented communications facility using a virtual terminal connection. User data is interspersed in-band with Telnet control information in an 8-bit byte oriented data connection over the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).
